I'm not aware of anything other than the fact that I'm running, sprinting. The world blurs by, and I can't make out anything specific within the blend of the colors of trees and houses, sidewalks and parked cars. I'm running out of breath, looking behind me every couple seconds. They're chasing me. 10 of them. I know I can't outrun them. I trip over a fallen branch and collapse on the ground, my body heaving and my lungs burning as I gasp for air. They are catching up to me. I look to my left and make out a street sign: Rosewood Lane. That's the last thing I see as my world goes dark and my body goes limp.
I sit straight up in bed, breathing heavily, my ratty old pjs that I've had ever since I can remember drenched in a cold sweat. I look at the clock. "Holy crap, it's 10:30!"
I throw my pale blue down comforter off of my shaking body, stand up and walk over to my 13-year-old little sister River's bed, which is on the other side of our tiny room, which consists of our two beds, one dresser that we share, and a window with a huge tree beneath it, vital for a quick escape if needed. I gently shake her awake. "Rise and shine, Riv. We have to go. You're already late for school."
She rolls over and moans, "What time is it?"
"10:30", I respond, which makes her jump straight up and start getting dressed for the day.
That's when she looks at me for the first time. "Auggie," short for August, my full name, "did you have another dream last night?"
She knows that I have dreams every so often, and she knows that when I do, they almost always come true. That's the weird thing about my dreams, and I don't think it's a coincidence.
"Yes, but what does it matter? You need to get dressed and ready for school. I will get breakfast ready."
She nods and continues with her morning routine.
Okay, now for the introduction. My name is August Waters. I'm 18 years old, and live with my little sister River in the ratty, broken down shack that we call a home. It was left to us by our parents, who died three years ago in a fatal plane accident on their way home from Brazil. Oh yeah, and both me and River vampires.
After both me and River had eaten a cold breakfast of leftover biscuits, we both hopp on our old rusty bikes that felt like they would fall apart any second when you were riding them. I have to ride with her to school, because she doesn't know the way and would get lost because she has the same sense of direction as a blind rat.
We pull up to the bike racks in front of the school's main entrance and lock our bikes up tight. Since she is late, I also have to walk River inside and sign her in. While I am bending over the counter filling out a tardy pass for her, I fee; someone tie a bandana over my mouth. In surprise, my hands fly up to try to wrench it off, but then both arms are twisted behind my back and securely fastened with another bandana.
My whole body is twisted away from the countertop to face my sister, who is in the exact same position as me. This is all I remember, because then they put a pad of something on top of my nose and mouth, and everything went black.
