My eyes pop open, but there's really no change vision-wise. I'm sitting in a dark room that has a glass ceiling, but that doesn't really help since its nighttime and cloudy, so you can't see the stars or moon. I'm laying on my back, which is very uncomfortable because my arms are tied behind my back with another bandana. I hear a squeak coming from right next to me, so I'm guessing that River is also in the same room.
A door opens to my left, and a sudden stream of bright light filters into the room. I'm temporarily blinded, so I guess I haven't seen light in at least 6 hours. My vision starts to adjust to the light, then I see a tall man who looks like a stereotypical bodyguard walking quickly over to me. He helps me and my sister stand, then introduces himself. "I'm Jason. I work for your parents."
I feel my face get wide with surprise as he starts talking again. "You were captured by the Academy, which is an evil organization who tries to capture all young vampires who they believe have potential to destroy the world. I work for the Kingdom, which is a corporation designed to help vampires like you control you powers and help save the world." While he's talking, he unties the bandana around my mouth.
I give him a look while spitting the bandana out of my mouth. "Look, I know we're vampires, but other than that, I don't think we have any other powers."
I look at River for confirmation. She nods in agreement.
"You'd be surprised. Let's get you back to the Kingdom. It's best to get started with your training as soon as possible."
I'm about to ask what training, but he shushes me and begins to untie the bandanas around me and River's hands and also the one around River's mouth. "Did you say you work for our parents?" River asks timidly.
Jason replies with a slight nod, and says, "I will explain on the way. Right now we have to concentrate on getting out of her without getting arrested."
We walk silently to the door where Jason entered. He peeks around the door-frame, and nods back to us. "All clear," he whispers, and we start to move out into the vast white hallway which seems to go on for miles.
It's hard to be nonchalant in that hallway, since even the slightest tap on the floor would echo throughout the whole thing. River, Jason and I tiptoe down the hallway, trying to be as quiet as possible so we don't get caught. We communicate if needed, but silently and through body language.
When we reach the end of the first hallway about 5 minutes later, (jeez, that was a long hallway) there are two more hallways that go to either the left or the right. Jason points to the right one, and we start to walk down this one. It seems less tense in this one, since it's not made all of white, and the ceiling is lower, which makes it echo less. River reaches for my hand, her whole body shaking. I gladly take it, since I'm scared as much as she is, which I don't want to admit.
When we get to the end of the second hallway, Jason peeks around the corner, and then, the next thing I know, my arms are being wrenched behind my back. For the second time today, I might add. This is turning out to be a crappy day.
After I'm turned so that I'm facing outward, I turn to look at Jason. He doesn't look scared, so I decide not to be, either. Our captors drag us down the hallway, but back the opposite way, erasing any progress we had made towards our escape. I glance quickly at River. "You okay?" I mouth at her.
She understands my silent message and responds with stillness, then a quick nod. The guard holding River sees this exchange, and wrenches her arms even more, making her wince in pain. I want to help, but realize that I can't.
About 10 minutes later, River, Jason and I are brought outside through a wrought-iron doorway. Since the building we were just in was quite dark, the sun is overpowering and I find myself blinking furiously until my eyes adjust to the sunlight. Then I feel relief in my arms as they are released by the guard. I shake my arms, then turn to Jason. "Why are they letting us go?" I ask. "I thought we were being captured and taken to jail or something."
Jason chuckles, then starts to speak. "August, River, meet Mark and Xavier. They also work for the Kindom. Their job is to 'work' at the Academy and keep us back at the Kingdom up to date on their plans. They were part of my plan to rescue you."
"Why didn't you tell us they worked for you? I was scared out of my mind!" River exclaims in a sharp voice.
I know she meant every word.
"I kept it secret because I knew you would ask questions," John replies. "Plus, do you really think I wouldn't have a highly detailed plan to rescue you two, Princess August and Princess River?"
"Princess?"
Both me and River breathe the word at the same time. Right then, I know our lives will never be the same again.
