After I had get out of the throne room, I run up to river's room. I knock on the door 5 times, and then I hear her yell, "it's open!"
I turn the brass doorknob and push the door open. It slides open smoothly, with no noise. God, this sure is different from home. "Are you ok?" I ask gently, walking over to the bed where my younger sister is laying, curled up in a ball.
"How do they not expect us to be mad? They completely abandoned us! They faked their deaths, and they abandoned us! That seems like something we have a right to be mad about."
"I yelled at them, too," I admit, "after you left."
She pulls her head put of the cocoon made of her arms, and she smiles up at me. "That's the sister I know and love," she says jokingly.
I grin back at her, and pull her into my arms. "I know this is a hard transition for you. It is for me, too. But we have to try to be open-minded about this situation. After all, mom and dad were just doing their jobs."
"You're right," river replies. "As always. I will try to be more open-minded. After all, they are our parents."
"That's right. Now we have had a busy couple of days. Try to get some sleep. Whoever wakes up first in the morning goes and gets the other one up."
"Agreed," river responds.
She crawls under the covers and I pull them up to her chin. I kiss her on the forehead and murmur, "it's all gonna be okay. Everything corrects itself in the end."
She nods, and I get up and walk to the door. She turns on her side and says, "goodnight."
"Goodnight, riv, and remember, I'm right across the hall."
But she's already asleep.
I walk across the hallway and into my own room. I pull on some flannel pajama pants and a tank top, and practically dive into bed. "Remember, everything will be alright," I think to myself, the same words I had just said to my little sister.
The thing is, I don't even know if I believe them myself.
I awake to Jason shaking me forcefully. I immediately know that something is seriously wrong. That's when I hear the screaming.
